After a year of tenancy, the property became infested with rats. Mattf, who was around 11 or 12 years old at the time, vividly remembers the following:
* His mother discovering nests of rats throughout the property.
* The use of various methods to eliminate the rats, including:
  * Killing them with a stick
  * Stomping on them

Mattf noted that almost anything lifted outside revealed a rat nest, indicating a severe infestation.
